Reverend John S. Nettles Scholarship
TRIBUTE: Mrs. Gertrude Nettles along with family, friends, and colleagues of the late Reverend John S. Nettles established the Reverend John S. Nettles Scholarship Fund to celebrate his life and honor his dream of assisting the youth of the community. Reverend Nettles was a leader, a community servant, civil rights advocate, and humanitarian who touch the lives of many. As minister of the Mount Olive Baptist Church for over 32 years, Reverend Nettles devoted his time, multiple talents, and boundless energies to attain justice and equality for his fellowman. Reverend Nettles worked devotedly to encourage and inspire youth to believe in themselves. Examples of his commitment to support youth are evident in his creation of two nationally recognized programs for youth; Project P.A.Y. (Producing Ambitious Youth) and "Education Par Excellence". Thus, this fund is created to foster hope, self-confidence and ambition in the graduates of Anniston High School.

AWARDS: The Reverend John S. Nettles Scholarship Fund is an award designated to graduates of Anniston High School. The Fund is intended to provide supplemental funding for full or part-time enrolled students, over a period not to exceed four years, to an accredited college, university or technical institution within the United States. The Foundation will project and allocate the assets available for scholarship awards depending on the fund's annual income.

APPLICATION: Guidelines and applications are available from the Anniston High School guidance department or the Community Foundation of Calhoun County. The Community Foundation will maintain and revise as necessary the guidelines and application documents. Applications must be submitted to the Community Foundation by February 1. There are no exceptions to this due date and the Scholarship Review Committee will not consider incomplete applications.

ESSAY: An essay is required with the application. The student is asked to describe his or her personal aspirations, educational, and career goals. This composition should be typed and be no longer than three to five double-spaced pages. The applicant should conclude the essay with the main reason why the committee should award the scholarship to him or her.

ELIGIBILITY: Graduating seniors from Anniston High School are eligible to apply for the award without regard to race, religion, gender, national origin, or disability. Priority will be given to seniors with strong moral character, distinct academic ability, recognized school, church and community service, and documented financial need. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale.

Members of the Nettles family and all relatives of donors who contribute more than two percent of the Fund's assets, are ineligible to receive a scholarship from the Fund. In addition, the Foundation's Board of Trustees, staff and Scholarship Committee members, including their spouses, children, adopted children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are prohibited from applying or receiving any scholarship, grant or financial award from the Foundation. Based on IRS regulations, this disqualifying exclusion exists for five (5) years after concluding volunteer service or employment.

REVIEW COMMITTEE: The Foundation's Scholarship Review Committee will review all applications and make recommendations to the Foundation's Board of Trustees for final approval.

REVIEW PROCESS: Staff will review the application for clarity and completeness. Copies of applications and all documentation will be forwarded to the Foundation's Scholarship Committee. Committee members will have four weeks to review the applications, conduct interviews, if necessary, and hold a final determination meeting. The recommendation will be submitted to the Foundation's Board of Trustees for final approval. Ideally, awards will be finalized and made public in May of each year.

AMOUNT AND PAYMENTS: The Foundation will make a scholarship payment at the beginning of each academic year. Distributions will not be made until the Foundation receives the (i) signed letter of acceptance provided by the Foundation, (ii) certified proof of enrollment from the institution. Checks are made directly to the financial administration office at the college or institution. No distribution will be made to any individual for any reason. Since this fund is renewable, it may not be awarded every year. Please check with the Foundation office regarding award status.

Students must inform the Community Foundation of any additional educational or financial aid grants or awards immediately upon notification. Failure to do so may result in the termination of the Award.

In addition, the scholarship recipient must provide the Foundation with an official copy of their college or university transcript at the end of each academic semester (December & May). Failure in any single year to maintain a 2.5 grade point average or better on a 4.0 scale will result in the termination of the scholarship award. Moreover, the transcript must indicate that the recipient is enrolled and progressing in their choice of study.

RESPONSIBILITY OF RECIPIENT: Each scholarship recipient is responsible for fulfilling requirements for admission to the college or institution of higher learning. The scholarship recipient must enroll no later than the spring term following their selection; otherwise, they forfeit the award. No award shall be carried over beyond twelve months from the date of acceptance. Recipients not completing the full academic term must request that the school reimburse the Community Foundation for any funds eligible for refund.

ASSUMPTIONS: The Reverend John S. Nettles Scholarship Fund Guidelines is not a contract. No obligation or liability of any kind will be imposed upon a scholarship recipient; nor will the Community Foundation of Calhoun County assume any obligation or liability.

These guidelines are subject to change; therefore, applicants should inquire if revised guidelines have been issued. This may include the due date of the application documents.

The Community Foundation will not (i) accept applications that are presented after the due date; (ii) contact students to locate missing documents such as letters of recommendation (iii) contact students to return the Letter of Acceptance form and (iv) contact students to provide proof of enrollment in order to receive payment.
