Leslie and Mary Ella Scales Memorial Scholarship
The Leslie and Mary Ella Scales Scholarship Fund is designated to the valedictorian at Anniston High School. The recipient may (i) be either a full-time or part-time enrolled student, (ii) attend any accredited institution of higher learning in the United States and (iii) pursue any field of academic study or technical training. The award can be used for tuition, fees and institutional room and board at the baccalaureate level.

In the event that the valedictorian declines the award, the scholarship will then be offered to the student having the second highest grade point average (GPA), otherwise known as the salutatorian. In the event that the salutatorian also declines the award, the scholarship will be offered to the student having the third highest GPA in the senior class. This process shall continue until the award is accepted.

Application:
These guidelines will be distributed to the guidance counselor at Anniston High School and also will be available directly from the Community Foundation.

To obtain the Leslie and Mary Ella Scales Scholarship, the recipient must provide the Foundation with a letter confirming his or her ranking as the valedictorian at Anniston High School at the earliest date that his ranking is available. The candidate must then confirm his or her intention to accept the award by signing a Letter of Acceptance provided by the Foundation.

Eligibility:
The scholarship award will be made to the highest ranking student, in terms of GPA, of Anniston High School, or its successor in interest, and will be awarded without regard to race, religion, gender, national origin, or disability.

Payment of Awards:
Payment is made at the beginning of the recipient's first academic term and is made only after proof of registration and a copy of the class schedule have been provided to the Community Foundation. Checks are made directly to the financial administration office at the institution. Students must inform the Community Foundation of any additional educational or financial aid grants or awards immediately upon notification. Failure to do so may result in the termination of this scholarship.

Responsibility of Recipient:
Each scholarship recipient is responsible for fulfilling requirements for admission to the educational institution of his or her choice. The scholarship recipient must enter post secondary classes no later than the fall term following their selection; otherwise, they forfeit the award. Recipients not completing the full academic term must request that the school reimburse the Calhoun County Community Foundation for any funds eligible for refund.

Assumptions:
The Leslie and Mary Ella Scales Scholarship Fund Guidelines are not a contract. No obligation or liability of any kind will be imposed upon a scholarship recipient; likewise, no obligation or liability will be assumed by the Calhoun County Community Foundation, except as expressly stated in this document.

These guidelines are subject to change; therefore, applicants should inquire if revised guidelines have been issued. This may include the due date of the application documents.
