Our Mission About Us

General Services.
Unlike other institutions, the Community Foundation of Calhoun County is dedicated to the donor’s intention and serves to fulfill that intention in a set number of years or in perpetuity. At the Community Foundation, our staff will meet with you and your advisor to discuss the vision you have for your community and how this vision can be achieved through likeminded donors who wish to strengthen our region. As a grantmaker, the Community Foundation is aware of the abilities of local nonprofit organizations and state agencies, where additional resources are needed and what emerging needs are developing. Donors can utilize the Foundation’s experience and professional skills to help ensure that their gifts are structured in a way that they will achieve their intended goals.

Establishing a Fund.
Companies, organizations, individuals and families can establish their own endowment fund at the Community Foundation to fulfill their specific charitable goals. You name the fund and define the areas you wish to support through a donor agreement. Funds can be created with a minimum tax-deductible contribution of $10,000 or a multi-year pledge. Future contributions can be made at any time in any amount or can be funded through a will or other designated beneficiary gift.

Each fund has a designated charitable purpose. The fund can be anonymous; it can be joined to a general charitable intent such as public safety, nutrition, health, recreation, education or arts and culture; it can be designated for one or more charities that share your values or it can be unrestricted for the general betterment of the community. Depending on your goals and intentions, grants or scholarships are distributed to nonprofit organizations or institutions either during your lifetime or after. These distributions are made by the Community Foundation in the name of the fund and can be awarded to any qualified nonprofit organization in the United States.

Family Foundations.
This classification is defined as a Supporting Organization, which operates in conjunction with the Community Foundation but has a great deal of autonomy. Most significantly, the Supporting Organization, when organized with or transferred to the Calhoun County Community Foundation, receives the same tax treatment as a qualified public charity. This is a substantial difference when calculating the “cost” to the family. Moreover, the Supporting Organization maintains its own name, charitable function and board structure. The Community Foundation provides the administrative and required IRS and tax documentation.

Named Fund Options.
Each of the funds listed below are all offered by the Community Foundation. In most cases, each of the funds can be established with the execution of a pre-established legal document. They can be established immediately or they can be created under a future will or trust. Please contact us for more information or specific fund guidelines.

Memorial, Tributes and Honorariums.
Anyone may make a contribution in any amount to the Community Foundation in honor of an individual, family or group. The gift can be in recognition of birthdays, graduations, promotions, special achievements, retirements or for any important event you specify.

The enduring role of the Community Foundation offers a fitting place to recognize the meaning and value of life. Contributions can be made during times of grief or to remind someone that you remember their loss on an anniversary or significant date. All tributes and memorials support the Foundation’s grantmaking mission to better the quality of life in Calhoun County. The Community Foundation will send an attractive acknowledgment card to the person receiving the tribute or memorial. In addition, you will receive a letter indicating that your contribution is tax deductible. All honorariums and memorials are further listed in the Community Foundation’s newsletter and Annual Report.
